Audience and critics alike have been wowed by Ida Cuéllar’s feature debut produced by Polar Star Films, winning the Audience Prize at DocsMX, Panorama Prize at DocsValencia and Latitud Prize DocsBarcelona. Comparisons to the X-Files abound and with several affirmations that ‘true life is stranger than fiction’ has put The Secret of Doctor Grinberg firmly in the true-crime and thriller category.
In 1994 and at the height of his career, Jacobo Grinberg mysteriously disappeared. The strange circumstances of his disappearance have given rise to multiple hypotheses and theories that have hindered shedding light on the case. Grinberg took the study of psychophysiology beyond the limits of traditional science in his attempt to map the infinite potential of the human brain. Serious and meticulous, a professor at UNAM, National Autonomous University of Mexico, and director of a modern laboratory, Dr. Grinberg researched and experimented to the point of proving the first signs of telepathy.
Undoubtedly, Dr. Grinberg was not an ordinary scientist, and he was obsessed with giving a scientific explanation to the practices of Mexican shamanism. That interest led him to relate to magical and inexplicable worlds, which eventually obscured his legacy and created a halo of legend around his disappearance.
Following the investigations of Chief Superintendent Clemente Padilla, this documentary reconstructs the surprising and real facts that lead up to the disappearance of Dr. Grinberg. An amazing journey through the exotic locations of Mexico, the United States, India, Nepal, Barcelona and Madrid.
