After winning the Biznaga de Plata for Best Direction at the Malaga Festival, DÚO will hit theatres on September 9.
The film portrays the alienation of two dancers confronting an unknown world that calls into question the meaning of their relationship and artistic endeavours.
North of Argentina. Carnivals. In the middle of a dance tour with her partner, Mónica realizes the absurdity of the trip: after 25 years together, the distance between the two of them is laid painfully bare. Juggling fears, desires and memories, she will have to choose which path to take. Loving sometimes means knowing how to let go.
In DÚO the filmmaker returns to the story of Mónica, the dancer and main character from her film Facing the Wind. Now, she has left her small Spanish town and is on tour with her partner through northern Argentina, performing a dance show.
Starring the choreographer and dancer Mónica Garcia, with whom Colell already worked on her feature debut Con el viento, and Gonzalo Cunill, the film is distributed by Atalante Cinema.
Meritxell Colell received Best Director Prize for the film at this year’s Malaga Film Festival – Zonazine section. The filmmaker is part of a new generation of Spanish directors whose work has achieved wide international recognition in recent years. Con el viento, her first feature film as a screenwriter and director, developed at Cinéfondation’s Atelier at the Cannes Festival, premiered at the Berlinale in 2018 and won the Silver Biznaga for best film at the Malaga Festival – Zonazine the same year. DÚO, is her second fiction feature film, which arises, in the words of the director, from “the need to follow the character of Mónica -after Con el viento-. Accompany her on a new trip back to Argentina and on a contemporary dance tour in remote territories where art is linked to life, because every transformation opens a new crisis”.
