This 75th edition of the Berlinale will World Premiere Only on Earth in this year’s competitive Generation section. The visually striking documentary takes audiences deep into Southern Galicia, one of Europe’s most wildfire-prone regions, during the hottest summer on record.
Through the perspectives of wild horses, a young cowboy, a fire analyst, an equine vet, and a farming family, Only on Earth explores the fragile balance between humans, animals, and a rapidly changing environment. The film sheds light on the critical role of Galicia’s wild horses in fire prevention and the growing tensions between nature and human development.
Danish director Robin Petré, known for her cinematic explorations of the coexistence of humans, animals, and nature, brings her signature poetic approach to the film. An alumna of Berlinale Talents and the Sundance Institute, Petré previously premiered her debut feature-length documentary From the Wild Sea in the Berlinale Generation section in 2021. Her short film Pulse won a Silver Dove at DOK Leipzig, and her work has been recognized at festivals worldwide.
“For as long as I can remember, I have had a strong connection to, and appreciation of, the natural world,” says Petré. “Yet whenever I return to the rural environment I grew up in, I’m troubled by how rapidly the landscape has been changing. I hope this film will leave a lasting impression on the audience as an unshakeable, unforgettable experience.”
Stephanie Fuchs, CEO of Autlook Filmsales, adds: “Robin Petré has created an impressive and visually stunning film that couldn’t be more timely. Only on Earth captures the urgency of our changing world with remarkable depth and artistry. We are proud to be on board and to bring this important story to audiences globally.”
